We gave Oliver the supplement with the syringe at around 1:00pm, and then I tried to breastfeed him at 3:30pm and he had the worst time latching on. It was awful. I tried everything to get him to latch; pumping a little to get the flow started, switching sides, hand expressing milk beforehand... NOTHING worked! He was crying and frustrated and I was crying and frustrated and we just couldn't get it to work. We had to go to the nursing mother's center to get Oliver weighed, so we went ahead over there to see if they could be any help. When I got there, there wasn't a lactation consultant available to meet with me, but they did weigh Oliver and he is up one ounce since Friday. Then I fed him and was able to get him to latch on while using a "my brest friend" pillow, which I ended up purchasing because it really did seem to make things easier and I hope it will!
After nursing for about 15 minutes on one side, they weighed him again, and Oliver had not gotten much from the breast even though when I pump after a feeding I will get an additional ounce. They told me to continue to give him the supplement after every feeding and that eventually he will be strong enough to drain the breast and to up the fenugreek. Also, I have an appointment tomorrow with another LC, so hopefully they will have some helpful things to say. Although that breastfeeding pillow set me back $$, I found out that I can go see the lactation consultants as much as I want for the next month without having to pay another insurance copay, so that was good news!
I'm trying to stay positive about the whole thing, either way I am in this for the next six weeks. I really want it to work out so bad! We just need to get through all of these issues at the beginning!
